Museum for the graves of Acanthus

A museum to host the findings from the excavations in Acanthus will be created in the town of Ierissos, eastern Halkidiki, on the site where this ancient town used to be. More than 18,000 graves have been unearthed in Acanthus in the last decades and strangely enough many of the dead people were in chains. Archaeologists haven't still solved this mystery, however they believe that these people were either slaves or condamned to death. The municipality of Stagira has donated a land of 500 sq.m. for the construction of the museum. In the meanwhile, new excavations will be held to reveal the whole ancient town, which used to be one of the most important city-states of Halkidiki in the antiquity and a prosperous port.
