Rhodes Geography

The island of Rhodes is the largest in the Dodecanese group. Rhodes is lying on the southeast corner of the Aegean Sea, just opposite the coast of Asia Minor. The island has a total area of 1,398 sq km and is 80 km long and 38 km wide.

The capital of the island is Rhodes Town, a place with a long history, which is also the capital of the Dodecanese Prefecture. The island is divided into ten municipalities. The population of the island consists of more than 100,000 inhabitants and the majority lives in the capital. The population leaving in Rhodes Town is about 60,000 inhabitants. The coastline of the island of Rhodes is embellished with golden sands, multi-colored pebbles, and crystal waters.

The main characteristic of the geography of Rhodes is the long coastline with a series of amazing coves and organized beaches. The western coast is more fertile and forested than the eastern one but also has rocky beaches. The island of Rhodes is hilly and wooded, offering a lush and flowered landscape.
