Santorini Cable Car

The Cable Car of Santorini was created by Evangelos Nomikos, a shipowner. He established the Loula and Evangelos Nomikos Foundation in 1979 and paid all the expenses of the cable car purchase and installation. He understood the transportation problem locals and tourists faced in Santorini due to the rudimentary roads.

The cable car now belongs to the Municipality of Santorini. It carries about 1200 people every hour and has been constructed by Dopplemayr according to Austrian regulations. The cable car serves the way up and down from the Old Port of Gialos to Fira. The journey takes about 3 minutes. Many tourists, however, prefer to take the stairs.
