Excavation of new archaic sanctuary

Three new archaic sanctuaries were discovered during excavations in the region of Mandra Despotikou on Antiparos, where an archaic sanctuary of Apollo had also been found. These new sanctuaries add interesting elements on the importance of the region in the ancient times. Moreover, a cistern of 3,40 metres deep was also found north west of the building. During the cleaning of the site, parts of other buildings were revealed, showing that there was an earlier construction on this exact spot. In fact, the marble head of an archaic Kouros (man statue) was found inside a wall, although the head was pretty weathered. Also archaeologists found the marble finger of a life-size statue, three copper coins and pieces of a 5th century vase, which shows that the sanctuary of Antiparos had strong cultural connections to Athens in the antiquity.
