General information

Ziros is a small agricultural settlement located 83 km southeast of Agios Nikolaos, at an altitude of 590 meters. Surrounded by wild mountains and the verdant Armenohandrades Plateau, Ziros is a typical Cretan village with stone houses and narrow alleys.

Close to Ziros lies the gorge of Xerokampos and a few 16th-century churches with old frescoes, such as those dedicated to Agios Nikolaos, Agios Georgios and Agia Paraskevi. The area is particularly rich in archaeological findings, with traces of a large Minoan settlement with Cyclopean masonry, circular and beehive tombs, as well as other Minoan or Archaic settlements, acropolises and villas. However, no systematic excavations have been carried out to this day.

No tourist facilities can be found there, and the closest village developed in terms of tourism is Makrigialos.
