First Olympic cup in Acropolis Museum

• Category: News
The silver cup awarded to Greek runner Spiros Louis when he won the Marathon in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1986 will be displayed at the new Acropolis Museum for a year, starting from September 2012. This news was announced by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which bought the cup in an auction held by the descendants of Louis this last April. The Niarchos Foundation promised to make the cup accessible to the public and to display it permanently at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Arts Centre in Athens when its construction will be completed. In the meantime, the Foundation selected the new Acropolis Museum to exhibit the cup, as this venue combines maximun security and easy access of visitors. The Foundation is also looking for other suitable venues to display the cup until 2015, when the arts centre is due to have been constructed. The photo is from www.tovima.gr
