Gythio has several festivities that result very interesting to visitors and locals and should be taken into account, in case you visit this town around their dates.
On New Year's Eve, people are gathered in the public square and exchange gifts and sweets, while fireworks explode, traditional bands play songs and all residents and visitors form a circle and dance.
The Carnival is also vastly celebrated in Gythio, as in almost all greek cities, in the last Sunday of the Carnival Period (in the end of February or in the beginning of March). |

People wear costumes and take part in the parade, which ends in the port. There are fireworks, music and dancing. In the second day of Easter, people get together on Kranae islet and celebrate according to the traditional local customs: they eat lamp on the spit, drink wine and dance traditional dances.
The Festival of Gythio, the so-called "Marathonisia Festival", takes place every summer, between July and August. Many public speeches are organized in the context of this festival as well as concerts, ancient theatre performances, volley ball games, painting and book exhibitions. |

On September, 14th, another religious festivity takes place: the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, followed by a Litany and an open trade market.
On October, 1st, there is a festival dedicated to the local fishermen, who fish the best maridaki in the world. Maridaki is a species of very small fish and the first catch is served in the square with plenty of free wine and traditional dances. This festival shows how important fishery is for this small town.
