Simi Villages: Panormitis village in Simi
Simi Panormitis 01 Panormitis Village Simi: The village of Panormitis, apart from being very picturesque counts on a feature that makes it one of the most special areas on Simi: the Archangel Michael monastery, belonging to the 18th century.

The monastery is located on the seafront of the village, in the southern coast, and is protected by an inlet that leads to a wide harbour and a small beach with fine sand that is usually empty. The fact of being surrounded by mountain sides covered with pines aids on the vibe of remote quietness of the building.

On the other hand, it can be seen from the ferries that usually deck on the mentioned harbour, offering one of its best sights. The sheltered little bay of the area is also ideal for decking, and heading to the western headland, a nice restored windmill can be visited. The style of the Archangel Michael monastery is Venetian, and it has great artefacts, such as antique chandeliers, and an impressive silver icon of the Archangel, which is the patron saint of the island, as well as the protector of sailors.

In addition, the monastery hosts two small museums that also attract many visitors to Panormitis. The museum displays a huge collection of offerings, since according to the tradition, when asking a favour to the Archangel it is necessary to give something in retribution. Many of these objects are made of gold or silver, and some of them are also put into bottles by sailors to protect them. The other museum displays traditional examples of folk art, usually related to fishing, shepherding and agriculture.

Another interesting fact is that this monastery still works, since it has a row of cells where the monks live, which are also available for renting in order to spend the night. In fact, on the day of celebration of this saint on November 8th lots of people from all over Greece come to this part of Simi. In the case of the pilgrims that come to this place during this period, they count on free accommodation, food and wine.

On the other hand, the inner courtyards have a sanctuary, ideal for those seeking for some solitude. These yards are also very picturesque, since they count on many exotic plants and trees. Another great detail about this monastery and its church is that they have no photographic restrictions, and the entrance is free.

However, it is good to count on some time to spend in order to appreciate it, since it takes approximately an hour to see the museum, and to explore the church and the cells. Regarding the access to Panormitis from outside Simi, it is given by ferries or excursion boats. In case of already being on the island, Panormitis can be reached by an available road from Simi town, which takes a drive of about an hour.

In case of preferring to walk, the trip takes six hours! Although there are a few car rentals available on Simi, it usually turns less expensive to take a taxi. The small village of Panormitis provides a great sense of peace and counts on the great Archangel Michael monastery as its best attraction. When making the proper travel arrangements, this remote area of the island can be easily reached and enjoyed.
