in Chorio welcoming the visitor.
As people are quite religious on Simi, people say there is a hermitage in every corner on the island dedicated to its almost 365 saints, that is to say, that there is a celebration related to one of them almost every day of the year.
However, according to tour agents, one of the most beautiful and picturesque hermitages is the one located on the Southern area of the island. It is dedicated to Panormitis, patron of fishermen, and it is in fact a monastery where people can visit the premises and overnight as well.
As renting a motorbike is quite cheap, it is possible to know most part of the island in one day or two, and participate in the festivities corresponding to that specific day and saint, or attend the wonderful music and movie festival in August.. |

manifestations like traditional dances, theatre, literature nights, lectures and cinema.
Needless to say that the fact that these events take place in buildings dating from the centuries 17th to 19th, makes them an unforgettable occasion.Although it is difficult to find a tourist that isn’t fond of any of these culture manifestations, the opportunity to partake in these events at the Panormitis monastery, Agios Ioannis courtyard, or even the Chatziagapitos manor house would be worth the visit anyway.
Moreover, this festival has counted with the participation of very well known artists such as the Moscow Orchestra, Stefanos Korkolis, Maria Farantouri, Dimitra Galani, Thanos Mikroutsikos, Stavros Xarchakos, Lavredis Machairitsas, Leonidas Kavakos, or Nana Mouschouri, which has contributed to Simi’s popularity. |

The devotion of Simi’s locals to arts and culture has gained the proclamation of Simi – along with Pedi, Panormitis and Nimporios – as a traditional site.
This distinction encourages Simi residents to take part in the thorough organisation of their festivals and other cultural events every year. |
