Patmos Villages: Skala village in Patmos Skala Village Patmos: Skala is the main harbour of Patmos and the biggest and most populated settlement. It is located in the central part of the island, 3 kilometres north-east of Chora. It is a charming settlement built around a lovely port. Skala started to develop during the 19th century because, before, it was insecure due to the frequent pirate raids. The area gradually became a business and shipping centre. New houses, hotels and enterprises have been constructed, following the growth of tourism.

Among the many sights of Skala are the ruins of an ancient acropolis, the 17th century Church of Agia Paraskevi of Cavos, the church of Panagia Koumana and the convent of Zoodochos Pigi. The lovely islet of Petrokaravo is located just in front of Skala and can be reached with fishing boats. Picturesque taverns, restaurants, shops of all kinds, Greek cafes and bars and nightclubs can be found in Skala. All kind of accommodations are available in Skala. Regular buses connect Skala with the rest of the island and fishing boats offer various daily excursions to various secluded beaches and nearby islets and islands.
