the Town Hall, and is famous for housing one of the masterpieces of religious art made by the well-known Greek painter El Greco.
The talented artist made this superb icon in 1562, when he was only twenty years old, illustrating the Dormition of the Mother of God (the name of the church).
The bell-tower of the church is simply amazing.
This is the most important Orthodox Church of Ermoupolis, and of the entire island. It is today the seat of the orthodox Mitropolis (bishop) of Syros and has some exceptional icons and woodcarving.
It is particularly interesting for its interior has a wonderful baroque architecture and decoration, which is unusual for an orthodox church.

Dimitrios was found. It is the visible from the sea for those who arrive by boat. It is overlooking the town of Hermoupolis, and its bell ring every time a ship arrives in the port of Syros.
The wonderful church of the Assumption was built in 1870 on the top of Vrodado Hill, in Hermoupolis and offers a terrific view of the neighbouring islands of Tinos and Mykonos.
As an Orthodox church, it has a nice domed roof; if it is locked, one can ask the key to the priest, whose houses is right next to the church.
This Catholic church was built at the beginnings of the 19th century in Ermoupolis and then rebuilt in 1829, according to the designs of the architect from Tinos, Simos, and following the orders of an Austrian consul.

Located near the wonderful cathedral of Agios Georgios, the Jesuit Monastery of Agios Ioannis (Saint Jean) was founded in 1535 to help the poor. It obtained its present appearance in 1852.
It houses some beautiful icons, ancient inscriptions, various objects of worship and an important library of 6000 old books and manuscripts.
This lovely chapel is located in the village of Galissas, north-west of Ermoupolis, and stands on a rock, overlooking the sea, surrounded by a landscape of an incredible natural and unspoiled beauty.
This catholic church is a really impressive bulding. It was built on the top of a hill in the village of Hroussa, south of Ermoupolis, and keeps attracting thousands of faithful during religious celebrations.
The bright blue orthodox church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) is very interesting and stands on the edge of the village of Poseidonia (also called Delagratsia), 12 kilometers south-west of Ermoupolis. |
