More Info about Pyrgos on Santorini, Greece General: The lovely village of Pyrgos on Santorini is set above Exo Gonia and from here you can get a good view of Mt Profitis Ilias which towers above. The village is built on the side of a hill and at the bottom there are tavernas, a shop which sells international press and the usual tourist style shops. From here you can see two large churches, as you climb towards them the beauty of the village becomes clear. The houses are the perfect example of Cycladic design and in superb condition. The first blue domed church has an ornate belltower which contains six bells in an almost pyramid like structure. From here it is just a short walk to the Kastro. You will notice the change in the stone and there are scattered ruins. On your way look out for the Zannos Melaton Hotel, which has some interesting architecture of its own.

The Kastro (castle) is one of five on Santorini Greece and dates from the 13th century. The fortified settlement within has houses with doors and windows facing within. The village straddles the ridge that runs down the middle of the island so from the Kastro superb views can be obtained of both sides of the island. Within the confines there are a number of delightful churches. Right on the peak sits Agia Triada. This church actually houses a display of icons which are worth perusing. As you enter you realize that the church has quite a modern feel. This is because it was turned into ruins by the 1956 earthquake of Santorini and has been restored quite recently. Right next to Agia Triada is Agia Theotkou which is quite stunning in its size and features an interesting brick pattern on its front.
