General:
The lovely village of Pyrgos on Santorini is set above Exo Gonia and from here you can get a good view of Mt Profitis Ilias which towers above. The village is built on the side of a hill and at the bottom there are tavernas, a shop which sells international press and the usual tourist style shops.
From here you can see two large churches, as you climb towards them the beauty of the village becomes clear.
The houses are the perfect example of Cycladic design and in superb condition. The first blue domed church has an ornate belltower which contains six bells in an almost pyramid like structure. From here it is just a short walk to the Kastro. You will notice the change in the stone and there are scattered ruins.
On your way look out for the Zannos Melaton Hotel, which has some interesting architecture of its own.
