Santorini Oia : Information about Oia on Santorini, Greece, Cyclades

More Info about Oia on Santorini, Greece
General:
Oia is another settlement on the caldera rim and from first sight looks like a smaller version of the Fira. The town is just as pretty and the mix of Cycladic buildings just as impressive.
But you’ll not find the ugliness and business of the Fira’s main street.

Oia on Santorini Greece is surprisingly large and there is a main pedestrian street which runs along its length.
There is a car park as you enter the village and it is well worth parking here and enjoying the walk. There are many craft shops, cafes and bars, boutiques and even a rather incongruous Easy Internet Café.

Oia has a history of attracting artists and there are a variety of small galleries to peruse. The Central Square is a bit of a misnomer, lying as it does towards the eastern end of the town. But from here you can enjoy the large Platani church. Near here there are also steps down to Armeni Bay. Be prepared for a long walk and don’t expect much of a beach when you get to the bottom as there is only a very small pebbled bay.

As you walk along you can enjoy the view of Thirasia which looms large. The volcano from here is much less imposing than from Fira and indeed looks somewhat flatter.
Continuing along the narrow passageway the view from Goylas is tremendous. This spot is ideal for enjoying the sights of the patchwork town with its variety of whites, blues, oranges and pinks. There’s also the sight of a windmill and down below is Amoudi Bay. It is some distance to get there and climbing back up the steps takes a lot of energy.
From this area the views of the sunsetting are magnificent. Many tourists make the journey here just for the sunset so expect it to get busier at this time. As the sun finally goes out of sight an appreciative round of applause usually breaks out.

Useful
Info:

The town contains a bus station, on the road to Fira and there is also a bank near to the Maritime museum. There is a wonderful book shop in the town called ‘Atlantis Books’. Located on the main thoroughfare it contains a good selection of English novels and friendly staff.
