More Info about Fira on Santorini, Greece
General:
Sat precariously on the hill top, Santorini's main town, Fira, must be visited by everyone who comes to the island. The view from the edge of the caldera is the highlight for many but there are also cathedrals to attract attention and the sheer beauty of the town’s architecture. Along with this are the museums, in particular the Museum of Ancient Thera.

The number of jewelry shops in the main hub of the town is staggering and you can also find the usual tourist style shops. In amongst these are some quite smart boutiques. As you walk around notice that the streets are cobbled with the black lava stone from the volcano. The town has a large number of hotels and from a high position you can notice that most have swimming pools and verandas offering their customers a superb view.

Below Fira sits the port. Looking down towards it, you are likely to see cruise ships whether at day or night. The path that descends steeply to here is usually full of mules carrying tourists. The other way of traversing down the side of the caldera is a cable car.

The main square of Fira in Santorini Greece is located back a bit from the waterfront and is not that impressive. Indeed it sometimes appears as more of a large carpark for scooters. Here you can find a number of internet cafes and travel shops along with a wide selection of banks. 25 Martiou Street is the town’s main thoroughfare and runs through the main square. Following it to the north takes you to Immerovigli while to the south it is the access point for Katardos.

There are many superb locations on the east coast to watch the sunset and Fira offers a great view. The Santorini sunset must be experienced when you are on the island and the waterfront fills with people to enjoy it. Later on the town is tastefully lit and it’s worth finding a position where you can enjoy the tapestry of the town’s lights along with the distant shine of villages. The volcano at this time is just a dark outline.
