You can find some amazing sights as well, like a tiny church in between shops.
In terms of orientation the white-washed alleyways are a bit of a maze and you can get lost in them easily. Of course this is not really a problem unless you are in a big hurry and it can often mean coming across an unexpected treasure. You will find it is hard to know where you are because most of the streets are unmarked – the main one “Matogianni” is though and this is a good point of reference, as is “Plateia Remezzo” where the buses are in the northern part of town. The busy ‘Taxi Square’, near the waterfront is also a place you can mark your way by.
The main town can be traveled all on foot and beware that it is simply not practical to enter the main part of town on scooters/cars because of the narrowness of the lanes. During evening hours the main roads into town are blocked off.
On the harbor front there are not one but at least three pelicans, used as a good photo opportunity for tourists. They can be seen hanging around the back doors of restaurants in the evening searching for food. With so many restaurants in the area it’s unlikely that they go hungry.
One of the highlights of the town was the Church of Panagia Paraportiani which is found in Little Venice. Unfortunately you cannot enter the church but can admire it from outside. The sheer number of churches is amazing, not just in the town but scattered across the island, it is worth poking your head in the door especially on Sunday when the services are on and you can see the local people in their pristine, best clothes for the occasion.
At night time the evening’s revelry’s don’t really kick off until the early hours. Eating later on is the norm and most of the bars are open until 3.30 am in the morning. Depending on your mood you can enjoy a quietish drink in one of the bars in Little Venice or if you’re after a party atmospheres then “Space” or the “Scandinavian Bar” offer drinks, dancing and loud music.
