Milos Villages: Kastro village in Milos Kastro Village Milos: The settlement of Kastro stands on the top of the hill, just above Plaka. It is no longer inhabited and the few remaining houses are in ruins, although some of them are being restored. This settlement population’s increased during the middle age, when the island was constantly under the menace of pirate raids. To protect themselves, the inhabitants built a continuous line of defence thanks to some thick exterior walls.

The period of great prosperity of Kastro were the 18th and 19th centuries: the village offered a healthy climate, a great safety and the advantage of being capable to watch all the ships approaching the island, as it was built on the higher spot of Milos. Kastro is worth-seeing for its lovely church and, mostly, for the marvellous panoramic view of the Aegean Sea, some islands and the entire Milos. The sunset seen from there is a magical experience of astonishing colours that will dwell in every visitor’s mind.
