The festivals in the chapels spread around the island form an important facet of the life and culture of the islanders.
Pilgrims from the neighboring island of Santorini also arrive to take part in the celebrations and visitors and tourists are warmly welcomed to join the festivities. |

Come September and it is time for the feast of Our Lady Kalamiotissa, celebrated on the 8th of September in the old Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa.
Preparations for the feast begin several days before and, on the eve of the feast, groups of islanders arrive in Anafi by fishing boats and climb the hill on foot or ride a mule to reach the monastery. |

The icon of the Virgin Mary is carried by the locals and an all-night ceremony takes place at the old monastery. The end of the mass marks the beginning of the fete, which is celebrated with goat meat, traditional music and plenty of wine.
Other festivals celebrated on the island are the Hyacinthia festival, featuring sports competitions, musical and dancing events. This festival is usually held in the middle of August. |
