central dome has a diameter of 25m and a total surface of 950 sq. m, while the total area of the auditorium is 1450 sq. m.
After Antonis Benakis death in 1974, many more items were added to the museums already extensive collection. Some of its more prominent collections include photographic and historic, neo-Hellenistic, architecture archives and also a Department of Childhood which includes an interesting collection of toys and games. Also showcased are various pieces of modern and modernistic art by Greek artists. There are also the exhibitions of the Cycladic, Minoan and Mycenaean art, as well as items from the Byzantine period. It counts on 280 seats equipped with interactive controls and the screen provides 3D and 360º views. The planetarium shows high-budget IMAX and OMNIMAX film productions.
This high technology, in combination with the size of the building, allows creating celestial scenes that feel very real, as if visitors were contemplating a great sky or the magnificence of the imposing space right in front of their eyes. These features make the planetarium so popular that there is an average of 3,000 shows every year, with a total of 600,000 visitors of all ages.
Apart from offering educational and entertaining shows on astronomy, the Athens Planetarium, in collaboration with other institutions, such as the International Astronomy Union and the National Observatory of Athens, also offers international astronomy conferences. Furthermore, it has a library with books mainly about technology and science. The library extends for three floors and has more than 45,000 books.
The Athens Planetarium is placed on Sygrou St, 387. Just take into account that weekend afternoon shows tend to fill up very quickly, so you have to book your tickets in advance.

Athens Planetarium: The first planetarium of Greece was founded in 1966 and in 2003 a Digital Planetarium was created by the Institution Eugenidou. It is one of the best planetariums in the world and was established with the testament of Eugene Eugenidis, a Greek ship owner and benefactor, who wanted to create an institution that would educate Greek young people in the sections of technology and science.
