The Municipal Gallery of Athens: The Municipal Gallery of Athens is placed on 51, Pireos street, on Koumoundourou square. It is housed in a stylish neoclassical building, built in 1874 by architect Panagiotis Kalkos. The inauguration of the gallery took place in 1982. Before that, the collection was displayed at the Cultural Centre of the municipality of Athens, on Acadimias st, and the particular building on Pireos street was a nursery.
The gallery houses the works of almost all Greek artists. In fact, it houses about 2,500 pieces, most of them painted by 19th and 20th century artists. The first piece of the Municipal Gallery was "The Fisherman", a sculpture of D. Philippotis, acquired in 1923. The gallery also includes an interesting collection of engravings, with works by great masters of this art, their followers and other young engravers. |
