Megalochori Village in Agistri
Information About Megalochori
Megalochori village Agistri: Megalochori is the capital of Agistri. The island played an important role from the ancient times, when it was used as a base of naval operations, as well as a point of rearmament.
However, in our days the main economical support is not given by these activities, as it is by tourism. Megalochori is surrounded by greenery and its natural coves count on the crystal waters that surround all Greek islands.
Fortunately, this scene is not abruptly interrupted by chains of modern hotels or big shops. Instead of it, the traditional cafes distributed along the tiled paths and lanes, form a picturesque scene that appears to be taken from the past.
In addition, Megalochori counts on a windmill remaining from ancient times. Regarding the houses, they are traditionally stone-built and white washed, counting on clay-tiled roofs and nice yards. Although there are some modern hotels in the area, the general traditional vibe of the place remains untouched, in spite of being the capital of the island.
Among its places of interest, we can point out the church of Agioi Pantes, situated in the pine forest on top of a hill. An outstanding fact about this place is that it remains from ancient times, when was part of a village called Kandouki, which no longer exists.
