This name of this church actually means the "Virgin Mary Not Made by Human Hands" in Greek. It is one of the most important paleo-Christian monuments in Thessaloniki and one of the oldest churches in Greece. The construction of the church started in the 5th century AD on the remains of a Roman bath. Along with its history, though, it has been reconstructed many times.

This is the Metropolitan Church of Thessaloniki and it is dedicated to Saint Gregory Palamas, an Archbishop of the town who lived in the 13th century and who is considered as one of the most important saints of the Orthodox Church. The church has a red round dome and it is located in Agias Sofias square. It celebrates twice a year: on November 14th, the day of the saint's death, and on the second Sunday of the Lent.

​​ Old Town Ano Poli

In an elegant, three-storey house that dates from 1870, in the center of the Old Town of Thessaloniki, there is the house where Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey was born in 1881 when the town was still under the Turkish rule. The Municipality of Thessaloniki donated the house to the Turkish state in 1935, which converted it into a museum. Visitors can see the rooms where the Turkish leader was born and grew up till 1912 when the town was set free and incorporated into the Greek State.

Many lovely 19th-century villas and mansions are located in the southwestern suburb of Kalamaria. Many of these villas were designed by Italian architects in Neoclassical style. One house of particular historical interest is the Villa Allatini, created by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli in 1896.
