Car trips to stunning places

Kefalonia is the island that you can never get bored! So many places to visit, that in fact you will definitely wish you could stay more! We rented a car, that was the only way to visit some villages we saw to the web. We started our trip, visiting Sami and the famous cave of Melissani nearby. The locals actually call this the "lake-cave". After your visit there, you will understand why. The roof of the cave has totally collapsed at one part of the cave, giving you the impression that you are actually floating in a lake. Whatever it is, this place is stunning. There are small boats that are able to take you there, all times of the day, and in our case, the boatman was also our guide. The cave itself is not very big, but this is an experience you will remember for many, many years to come. At some point, you will come across a tiny isle, inside the cave. It is said that this isle was used for ceremonies in ancient time and this is the reason that the cave is also called, the cave of the Nymphs.

Another memorable stop in our trip around Kefalonia was Fiskardo. A not so big fish village with lots of restaurants at the port. The food, especially fish, was amazing! I could write for ages about all the places we visited... maybe I will add some more soon, but all in one: Stunning beaches and waters, do not miss Melissani Cave and of course, rent a car and travel! You will not regret one minute, not even from the time driving, the view and the secret places and beaches you can find are worthy every single second you've spent in your car.

Sudden but beautiful trip

Our trip to Kefalonia in August was sudden and short because we booked last minute flights and had only four days to spend, however it was very nice. Of course, you can't see the whole island in just four days but we saw most of it, the most beautiful parts.

The first thing to mention about Kefaloniais the wonderful beaches. We rented a car and toured around and the good thing is that roads are coastal, so we had the chance to see many beaches along our way. My favourite was Antisamos (surprisingly!!), although the famous Myrtos was also beautiful but a bit crowded. Xi and Poros were also great, the kind of tourism that beaches are organized but don't seem ugly.

Argostoli, the capital, was very busy, probably because all activities are there. Locals, tourists and traffic were all over the place. The cafeterias in Argostoli were always crowded. We had a hard time finding a good spot where we could sit and chat over coffee. However, the noise and the mad rush added a unique charm to this place.

We didn't see any archaeological sites in Kefalonia but we visited the Cave of Drogarati. Stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave were huge. The tour guide informed us that this cave entrance was exposed during an earthquake. This place has rare geological phenomena and is about 150 million years old. The most interesting feature of this cave is its temperature that remains always 18°C, although the humidity level can sometimes reach upto 90%.

Last summer, we had been to beautiful Kefalonia. I was completely overwhelmed by the sight of the huge mountains, the looming cliffs and the endless valleys filled with dense olive plantations. This island has a unique natural beauty that charms your senses. The local people are very friendly and their warm hospitality is truly endearing. We stayed in Skala and our hotel was very close to the beach. We enjoyed water sports and swimming here. This beach is fully developed with sun beds and loungers for tourists. I simply loved the sea food dishes there!

We roamed about Kefalonia by car since it is comfortable and easy that way. We toured Melissani Cave, Agios Andreas Monastery, Church of Saint Gerasimos and went north to Fiscardo village. This was my favourite touristy place and it would get very popular in the evening, particularly with people coming to have dinner.

Mounda Beach Hotel

My husband and I stayed at Mounda Beach Hotel for a few days honeymoon after our wedding in Zakynthos. The hotel was a few km from Skala and signposted from the main road, which made it easy for us to find when arriving late at night. The reception from the manager and staff was extremely friendly and accomodating. The hotel is small villa style accomodation set in a beautiful garden, we had the biggest and quietest room i have ever had on holiday with the most beautiful views from the veranda, of the gardens and the beach. It was so very tranquil compared to large high rise tourist hotels i have stayed at all over greece in my years of visiting it, Our room was throughly cleaned regularly during our stay, and had romantic and creative touches added (fresh flowers arranged on our bedside tables etc). The manager is a really lovley guy called Alex who speaks good English and he personally recommended us places to go and things to see during our days in Kefalonia, which were great recommendations and we really enjoyed visiting. Breakfast at the hotel was an amazing spread, brought to your own table, of yoghurt with honey, greek pastries and biscuits, coffee, orange juice, and plates of salad, ham and cheeses all included in the price of a night at Mounda Beach. It was the best hotel breakfast I have ever had! The evening meals were also perfect. The fish was so fresh, the wine selection fantastic, and the sound of the sea so close to the dining balcony made our honeymoon as utterly romantic as it could possibly be! I had to write a review of this hotel, as it is the best hotel I have stayed in by miles and the manager and staff really go out of their way to welcome and look after you. My husband and I will definately be staying here again and I would recommend it to anyone.

Robola wine will make you sing

My eyes have never seen before so much green and blue altogether as in Kefalonia! A remarkably clean island and I was given the chance to try beauty mask made of argilus that my children gathered from the cliffs on the beach in Katelios. Above us was the mountain Ainos and a local granny said to us that on the crown of it there are wild horses. I did not spot them by I was lucky enough to see a strange phenomenon that is very common though among locals.

In the village of Markopoulo there is an orthodox church of the Virgin and in August, inside you will find plenty small snakes, harmless though, with red cross on their heads and tongues, to praise the virgin Mary in August. They appear every year except from the years that the island was wrecked by earthquakes. I should really upload the picture that my son holds them!

It is not strange though that here was shot the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin and to tell the truth gave me the idea to spend my vacation there. Drink also local wine robola, it will make your heart sing... and I think your husband also!!!

We have eaten at the Koyzina Taverna since they opened their restaurant - 3 years ago. The taverna is run by the owners, Stelios and Denise, who always make you feel very welcome. The tradional Greek food they serve is excellent.

We stayed at the Marina Anna apartments for 1 week in September. The apartments are simply furnished but spotlessly clean. Both the kitchen and bathroom bins were emptied every day. We had a studio on the top floor and the views over the bay were wonderful. We would certainly stay at the Marina Anna apartments again.

Diona the best accommodation ever

I spent my holydays in Kefalonia at Diona studios: only 50 meters or less from the beach! The rooms have a/c, very usefull kitchen and bathroom with shower, and a small pretty balcony. The seaview is nice, in front of the weel grumed vegetable garden. The personell is very friendly and the cleaning is about three times per week. The prices are very cheap, expecially for the position. There are four restaurant close to the studios and four cocktail bars. The seafront is very calm. I think this is the best place for people with children or workers which are looking for relax.

Completely mesmerized

What draws me to the beautiful island of Kefalonia is the beguiling landscape of the region. On my visit to this island, I was completely mesmerized by the sight of the imposing mountains, the striking cliffs, the beautiful lush green vineyards and the stunning beaches.

We stayed at a resort in Lourdas. From there, each day we took our rented car and set off to tour this beautiful island. The capital city is Argostoli and it gets very busy in the daytime. It was very hard to find parking and we had to be very careful, because the locals drive very fast and careless. I think a municipal parking area is what Argostoli needs to get a little off traffic.

Most beautiful villages on Kefaloniawere the villages on the slopes of the mountains. They had the best view to the green forests. The villages on the coasts were more touristic. Fiscardo in particular was a bit "created-of-tourism" village and it seems to live more of this. Assos was more traditional, but still something was missing. You could see rooms to let all over the small port and this was a bit sad sometimes.

On the other side, beaches on Kefalonia were more picturesque. If you don't like umbrellas and sunbeds, take the car and discover the small coves around Sami and Saint Efimia. Small pebbled coves with greenery around and some privacy: great for couples.

Support beauty not hooligans

Kefalonia is a very nice island, though some areas are rather touristic. It is great for relaxing and has amazing beaches. Certainly go to Myrtos and then get off the beaten track and discover your own small paradises: there are plenty of small beaches where you can be almost all alone, even in high season. The island is so big that it is so easy to get lost from crowds!

The only thing that strikes me bad every year is how negligent some people, locals and tourists alike, threat the beautiful nature : lots of garbage. Please, take care of mother earth, do not take it for granted!

Fiskardo, to my personal opinion, is totally fake. Assos is more real and more beautiful, it doesn't try to be picturesque, it is picturesque! In the tourist developed areas, you really have to search for the genuine greek food and spirit. Some tourists expect that they are served the same food as at home (sausages, BBQ-sauce, etc) and some restaurants try to satisfy that demand. Please, hang on to the true character of your beautiful island. Don't support hooligan invasion. Support the incredible beauty of Kefaloniawith all your heart!
