The Monastery of Platytera in Corfu, Greece: The Holy Monastery of Virgin Mary Platytera is located in the neighborhood of Mandouki, in a walking distance from Corfu Town. As it is not in the promenade of the Old Town, it is not that common among visitors. However, from a historical aspect, this is one of the most important monasteries on the island. The monastery was built in 1743. In 1799, during the French-Russian-Turk war, the people of Mandouki were locked there to save themselves. Unfortunately, the monastery was sieged, people were killed and the church was destroyed.
The Monastery of Platytera distinguishes for its tall bell tower. There is a nice patio and a garden around the church, while in the basement there are the graves of two important Greek personalities: Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of modern Greek State who originated from Corfu, and Fotos Tzavellas, a famous hero of the Greek Revolution. In the interior of the church, there are rare Byzantine icons and interesting frescoes.
The Platytera Monastery is located in Corfu Town just a 10-minute walk away from the central bus station and a 7-minute walk away from a parking lot.
