General information

Located on the narrow strip of land that joins the two halves of Astypalea, a stone’s throw away from the scenic Maltezana, Plakes is a tiny sheltered cove that seems to have sprung out of a fairytale. Sheer cliffs and impressive rock formations enclose a pebbly beach fringed by crystalline waters that take on dazzling turquoise and azure hues. On the left side, flat slabs of stone (plakes in Greek) cover the seabed, giving the beach its name and making it a must-visit destination for snorkeling enthusiasts.

Moreover, the diminutive size of the beach means that Plakes is completely non-organized, so it is perfect for anyone seeking to unwind and get away from it all in a place of stunning natural beauty. If you come early in the morning or during the low season, you will probably feel as if you are on your own private beach! It is important to bear in mind, though, that this changes during the afternoon hours, when the beach attracts great numbers of visitors.

Access is possible both by car and via public transport. In either case, you will have to follow the dirt path that starts close to the bus stop and proceed on foot for about 10 minutes to reach the beach. The trail is rather smooth at first, but towards the end, it can be quite demanding, especially for young children. Be that as it may, Plakes is sure to reward you for your effort! Just make sure to come prepared with good walking shoes, water, and anything else you might need.
