Banning mule rides

Even the locals who work in the stores expressed how the mules are over worked and mistreated especially through peek season all summer.

This needs to stop please do not pay to ride the mules when there.. There are many other things to do there -It is a beautiful island with lots to see -rent a 4 wheeler instead--The donkeys are not givin food or water till sun down -and they are going up and down the stairs from sunn up to sun down-with open sores on there legs --I cannot bellieve that this has not beenn banned-It is horrible to see and leaves a bad taste about the island --all my friends that are animal lovers felt the same way. We all made a pack not to go back unless the ban is put into place to stop the donkey rides once and for all... We will spread the word to anyone who wants to go see beautiful santorini

It's Cruel to the Mules

It’s Cruel to the Mules…

I have personally witnessed handlers severely mistreating the donkeys. PLEASE, do not support this!

The abuse takes several forms. The donkeys are forced to climb up and back down a pathway with around 600 VERY STEEP steps, making as many as seven trips a day between 9 o’clock in the morning and sunset. Often, the animals are required to carry tourists who, putting it bluntly, are obese and may weigh considerably more than the donkeys themselves. And the mules must do this exhausting, grueling work in blazing sunshine and searing summer heat, often with unsatisfactory food, water and rest periods, plus few if any breaks in the shade. To add insult to injury, they may be wearing ill-fitting harnesses that inflict cuts and sores on their bodies, while their owners or handlers may frequently strike them with sticks to make them move or hurry up. In short, they toil under cruel and deplorable working conditions.

Day trip from cruise. Wanted to take cable car, go to Oia then visit Santo Winery.
Cable car was straightforward. At the top no tourist information or anyone at all interested in showing us where taxi or buses were. Eventually found a house owner to tell us the way to the taxi rank. Still no tourist information. Taxi rank had 2 taxis and only 1 wanted to take our first group to Oia. Had to wait 15 minutes till another taxi arrived who agreed to take the rest of our party. 30 minutes between Fira and Oia. Dropped us in a small square and was told this was the only pick up point for both taxis and buses. Still no tourist information. Was given instructions by taxi driver on where the blue domes buildings were. I counted 6 in total, definitely not how it is shown on to and magazines. Streets smelly, tight and uneven. Back at square no taxis or buses. The taxi come bus hut had no one or even time tables. Called the taxi number and rang out every time. By luck a minibus driver offered to take us back to Fira and bus station. He informed us

Postcard Island but count the change at supermarkets

Loved this island Santorini with its magical, unusual landscape and beautiful buildings. But somehow my stay was ruined by dishonest supermarket cashiers. On multiple occasions I was given a change short of few cents. I hate being cheated and I always requested to give me the missing cents. You would not normally expect this to happen in a major supermarket chain like Carrefour in Thira. By the way, when I told the cashier the change is short, she replied "I know" . Blimey! So they do it deliberately! They never said sorry, no apologies. I think management should look into this, as it IS A CRIME!! So my advise to all travellers who will visit Santorini: count your change!

Category: Santorini Art Shop > Thiras Art

I ordered a replica of an antique thira fresco and, apart from obtaining a true piece of high quality art, I received one of the kindest attention I have ever experienced when making a purchase. I enthusiastically recommend going and visiting them if in Fira, or on their web page. Ilias is really worth, a true artist and a great professional. Thanks a lot

Make sure you visit Santorini when you go to Greece. Its magical! An island that is a volcano, what could be dreamier? Make sure you try the local naturally sweet red wine, sweet tomatoes and lava. It's a must see. The hotel with its sea views are great and the people are friendly.

I visited Santorini at date 09.07.2013. I went there by ferry from Rethymno. It took 3 hours to come there by ferry for my one day trip to this wonderful island. From Thira port our tourist group went on by bus, first up to the Village of Oia in the north of the island.

In Oia are narrow cobbled streets, white hauses and blue domed churches. Oia is a very beautiful and romantic place. It is unique and the view out to the sea wonderful. From Oia we went 11 kilometres to south to the Thira town which is the capital of Santorini. Thira is a centre for tourism, commerce and society. Here are several world class museums, a fantastic archaeological site, great shopping and dinning oppurtunities. The atmosphere in the town is fine and the view out to the sea is excellent. Thira has some of the best views of the caldera of Santorini.

For me it was a very fine and interesting trip to go to Santorini. If you travel to Greece go to Santorini I am sure that you will like the island.

I have read a lot of reviews and I seem to be in the minority as i didn't like Santorini at all. I have traveled to Greece a number of times and only visited Santorini once years ago and that was for the day. I did plan on staying but myself and my 2 young kids were camping and when I took one look at the campsite toilets they were disgusting. So we got outta there and went back to Naxos. I'm talking maybe 20 years ago now.

Last year we decided that we will visit Santorini and went there from Milos. Yes the view from the boat was good, we got the high speed. Yes the view when we left was nice this time on a ferry. We stayed somewhere near the Black beach. Luckily we had a swimming pool as walking on very hot black sand isn't nice. Didn't think the beach was all that great and the high prices for a beer. We stayed by the swimming pool for the next few days. We visited Fira on our last full day. The town was full of jewellry shops. It just looked fake to me. Only there for the cruise ships. We went to a restaurant for something to eat and after looking at the prices we ended up sharing a Greek salad.

The views from high up were amazing I give you that. But the crowds were killing me. I wanted especially to see the amazing sunset. But at this point we were bored and fed up and didn't bother waiting. I'm glad that I did get to see Santorini and I can now tick it off my list.

All of us are subjected to the charms of advertising, and we tend to idealize some destinations. There are so many beautiful photos of Santoriniand and some slight disappointment is inevitable when we actually get there (although I still have not been there). I value your opinion.

Sunset lovers paradise

World-famous sunsets over the caldera make Santorini a destination for lovers and honeymoon-couples. The main town of Fira is perched atop cliffs overlooking a sunken volcano, the views are truly outstanding.

The island is, perhaps, not blessed with the natural beauty of some of Greece's other Mediterranean jewels and the beaches won't win any prizes. However, Santorini certainly makes up for this with its buildings of classic Venetian design and signature blue-domed churches.

Glorious sunsets are Santorini's claim-to-fame and are not to be missed.

Finally I managed to travel to Santorini, the most beautiful island of Greece. I spent there four unforgettable days where Ι could relax and have fun with my friends. I combined swimming in the largest beaches, food, many coffees overlooking the volcano, walks in the paved alleys of Fira where I really was stunned by the numerous shops and little bars. Oia is equally beautiful, Ι had the chance to visit just one day before I left. You are literally impressed from the traditional houses and the diversity of colors and architecture.

There are hundreds of hotels and traditional guest rooms everywhere in Santorini, even in the smaller villages. I was surprised to see that all locals in Santorini are English speakers and very kind. I enjoyed swimming and sunbathing at two lovely beaches, Perissa and Kamari. They were organized with sunbeds but I preferred to put down my towel and relax, no need to pay for extra facilities. During my stay there, I also visited Pyrgos where I had the best local delicacies. On the third day we enjoyed a little tour around the volcano, people were allowed to swim in the thermal waters where I didn't actually because they looked dirty to me. The next stop was Thirasia, we had a great lunch and after three hours we arrived in Oia. We saw the sunset but it was so crowded that I personally couldn't enjoy this moment.

In Fira you will find great bars. This is the best nightlife spot in Santorini, the rest places do not have many bars, except for few beach bars that stay till midnight.
