Lassithi Xerokampos (Alatsolimni) beach

General information

Alatsolimni is unlike any other beach in Crete. Located around 500 meters east of the Xerokampos settlement and 15 kilometers from Zakros, this secluded beach stands out for its natural salt pan.

During the winter, the salt pan is flooded with seawater, creating a small lagoon, while, during the summer months, the water evaporates and the lake dries up, revealing layers of salt. This small lagoon has been declared a UNESCO protected area, as it is an important wetland for hundreds of migratory birds that seek refuge there while waiting for the wind to abate. Thus, if you come in springtime, when Alatsolimni is still covered with water, and bulrushes and other beach plants blooming around it, you might be lucky enough to see herons, pelicans, and even flamingos!

The beach in front of Alatsolimni is marvelous, with shallow waters and a sandy bottom, while, to the east, you can find Moures, three tiny fjords that are ideal for snorkeling. It can easily be accessed by car and lies close to cafes, taverns and shops.
