Nafplion History, Greece: Information about the history of Nafplion

 

 

The area around the fascinating, historic town of Nafplion used to be a bustling port in the Neolithic period.

The reason this place was deserted during the Classical period is not known and Pausanias the geographer did not mention any significant incident happening during this period either.

The city was named after Nafplios, son of Poseidon, and was also famous as the birthplace of Palamidis, the local hero of the Trojan War.

The city was obliterated by Damokratis the king of Argos as it allied with Sparta during the 2nd Messenian War around 6th century BC.

emerged as a stronghold of the Byzantine Empire.

In 1211 AD the Venetians took control over the town and it remained under their control till 1542 AD when the Turks seized control of Nafplion.

the town was captured by the Italian Fascist Regime, these political prisoners offered their help to serve in the Greek army against the Regime. Their appeal was not only rejected, they were disgracefully handed over to the Italians and as a result they were executed.

A similar incident had happened in the past during the Greek War of Independence in 1821 when General Theodoros Kolokotronis, who was a war hero, was framed by his political opponents of treason and was imprisoned here.

After the Greek war of Independence, Nafplion was the capital of Greece from1829 to 1834. During the 20th century, political prisoners were kept imprisoned in Palamidi.
