Lefkada Beaches: Agios Giannis beach in Lefkada Greece
Lefkada Beach Agios Giannis 01 Agios Ioannis Lefkada: Agios Ioannis beach is the closest beach to the island’s capital, just a couple of kilometres away, and one of the best beaches of the island. Endless, golden and sandy, with turquoise waters, the beach reminds of a Caribbean landscape; the remains of old windmills give to the place a unique strong atmosphere. Because it is a windy beach it has become the second favourite windsurfing spot of Lefkada after Vassiliki. It attracts many skilled windsurfers and kite surfers.

The area surrounding the beach offers a wide range of accommodations among which some specially organised to house windsurfers and their material. Some cafes and a windsurfing and kite surfing club board the beach of Agios Ioannis-Frini.

Our Impressions:
It’s only a short trip past the lagoon to this beach from the main town. There is a short sloping strip of whiteish sand towards the left end of the beach which most people use to sunbathe. To the right of this the beach runs on and on past a string of windmills. It is in this area that the kite surfers make their own. Early evening is the best time to observe them flying up and down at the water at quite a speed. There is often about 30 or 40 people kite surfing and it is a wonder there are few collisions. Obviously this kind of sport requires a bit of wind and because of this the beach is not ideal for sunbathing.

Right at the far left end of the beach, somewhat obscured from view you can find the Agios Ioannis Antzoussia Church. The church is whitewashed and built along a wall. It is almost Cycladean in its design but you will notice the edges are not rounded. Inside it is very tiny but there are a few interesting icons. Next to the church you can see a path which meanders up around the headland and round to an unused bay. This is a pleasant walk and gives you a good perspective on the marvelous shades of blue water stretching out along the sand.

Impressions: This is one of the island’s ‘active’ beaches. Not recommended for those who come for sunbathers, there are plenty of better beaches for this on the nearby west coast. But it is good just to marvel at the kite surfing and wandering down to the church and headland.
