The monastery of Agia Moni is sacred and dedicated to the Holy Virgin Mary.
It was built in 1840, on the top of a very high mountain, and has an incredible view on the harbour of Diakofti and the Peloponnese.
Religious ceremonies are held every 6th of August, in honour of the Virgin Mary.

Built in the settlement of Areoi, close to Milopotamos, the 12th century Byzantine church of Agio Petros is a little architectural marvel. In its yard, some remains of prehistoric structures have been found.
This really beautiful church was built near the west wall of the Venetian castle (the kastro), and has an amazing iconostasis and wonderful portable icons.
The original church of Agia Anna was built in the 17th century and has the particularity of having an extremely beautiful bell tower.
The Estavromenos (the crossed One) is the actual Metropolis of Kythira. Before being public, it belonged to the wealthy Darmaros family. The iconostasis inside the church is astonishing.

This square- shaped monastery is built in the village of Engremno, near Kapsali.
It is believed that it is in this monastery that Saint John the Theologue (Agios Ioannis) began to write the Apocalypse.
The monastery was named in his honour.
Agios Georgios is a lovely little church dated from the 6th century AD.
It is built on the top of a mountain, has a splendid view and is close to Agia Moni.
A mosaic floor representing a hunting scene has been preserved in the interior of the church.
Near the church, a sanctuary of Minoan times, founded in 1992, can be seen. |
