Little changes through time

After many years, I had the chance to enjoy a two-week holiday in one of the best islands in Greece. My studies led me to France where I currently live, but as a Greek woman I was always attracted by the Greek islands, especially Ithaca. The time I spent there was unique, in Vathy where we stayed I could feel a very cosmopolitan aspect full of bars, restaurants, shops and everything you might need. Rent a bike and go to the beautiful beaches, Filiatro, Sarakiniko, Agios Ioannis. You can seat at the beach all day, you will never get bored of the blue green water. The island was quiet with relaxing atmosphere, perfect for my tastes. It was my second visit after 12 years and found very little changes to the scenery of life.

A true legend

Given the legends of mythology associated with Ithaca, I was surely convinced that there was something magical about this place. Five years have passed since my last visit in Ithaca and my memories remain strong. I was impressed by the atmosphere and natural beauty of this small island. Vathy where we stayed is a wonderful village with many tourists during the high season. The villages of Ithaca are ideal for walks between the hidden alleys and narrow streets. Everyone will share a nice word with you and help you explore the island. After all, Greeks are widely known for their hospitality. Ithaca has the best beaches with green crystal waters and white-pebbled shores. I visited almost all of them, during a period of 2 weeks. I personally recommend Agios Ioannis, Frikes and Skinos bay. Most of them are easily accessed but in any case you will need a bike. Not all the beaches are organized, actually very few are organized. Some of them have to be reached on foot. The restaurants in Ithaca introduce their local products and offer an unforgettable experience which comes from the authentic recipes and fresh ingredients of their land. Hopefully, I gave you an idea of what to expect from this beautiful island. Enjoy!

Revitalise body and soul

A visit to Ithaki is like Kephalonia in miniature. The ferry trip across from Sami is an early morning pleasure. If it is a day trip, it is a good idea to take a car, for ultimate freedom on the island. However, if it is a holiday there is car hire on the island. I stayed at Penelope Studios near the harbour in Vathy, the capital. Perfect accommodation with large apartments, well equipped including T.V., even a toaster! A good size swimming pool was a very welcome addition.

Vathy is a pleasant small town, occupying several tavernas and bars. Some of these surround the square. While I was visiting a few years ago, Greece won the European football tournament. The match was screened on large TVs in the square. After the victory, the islanders celebrated by driving around the town in cars or on scooters, beeping horns. Meanwhile fishing boats joined in with their hooters. Later there was a grand firework display. Festivities went on late into the night and it was great to be part of their success.

Boat trips depart from Vathy harbour. One boat sails around the island while another day excursion goes to Lefkas and the Onassis island of Skorpios. On the way, the skipper shows the passengers a cave in which a WW2 u-boat hid from their enemies.

The drive from the capital towards the north of the island is very pretty. Climbing up into the mountains, the views out over the Ionian sea are spectacular. There are attractive, small villages to drive through. One of these is Lefki, which has old houses bordering the road and an abundance of colourful flowers spilling over their garden walls. Dotted along this stretch of coastline are several coves, for a welcome dip.

The small village of Frikes is positioned at the north of Ithaki and is a good stopover for lunch. Tavernas border the harbour and I enjoyed a meal of Souvlaki and Greek salad. Driving out of Frikes, beside the road to Kioni, is a perfect cove. It is small and quiet, perfect for a swim and an hour of relaxation. I shared my time there with a little girl and her grandmother. I was envious of their lifestyle, such natural beauty on their doorstep with long sunny days in which to enjoy it.

Whether it is a day visit or a week's holiday, Ithaki cannot fail to revitalise body and soul. I very much look forward to revisiting this little island.

Nice beaches and low prices

Ithaca was our two-day trip from Kefalonia. The boat left Fiscardo and arrived in Kioni Ithacaand from there we took a taxi to Vathy. We chose a hotel in the capital to be close to all activities. Although the landscape of Ithaca was not much different from Kefalonia, it had a more quiet atmosphere. Except for Vathy which would get a little busy, all the other villages were alive only in the day for their beaches. At night, people would come to Vathy for a drink, a calm night out. Frikes was my favourite beach, but still we didn't go to many beaches. For a nice cafeteria, I suggest you a venue above Stavros, on a hill with gorgeous view. Prices in Ithaca are not that high compared to other expensive Ionian islands, like Zante or Corfu. They are almost as low as in Kefalonia.

Not to wonder why Ulysses wanted so badly to come back to his home island Ithaca after my recent vacation there! The lack of tourist development has meant survival of a peaceful style of life which other obviously attractive Greek islands have lost nowadays. There are tiny pebbly coves all around this small island, which has two harbours Frikes and Kioni. Along picturesque colourful old Venetian houses and remains of windmills, enjoy your dinner waterfront as the waves form the incoming boats smoothly touch your feet. Take a walk on local green valleys where your nose can smell so many herbs (oregano, mountain tea, chamomile etc) and funny as it may sounds you can see even menir (as fellow Obelix!) in Anogi village! Although Ithacais too close to other Ionian islands, such as Kefalonia, it is much cheaper but I would not recommended to those who just need nightlife!

Our three days in Ithaca were enough to see a lovely, pure green island and relax. We went there after a week in Kefalonia and I have to say the two islands look a lot to each other: both green and relaxing, with wonderful beaches and villages, only Ithaca is less popular. Our studio was in Kioni, which is even more quiet than Vathi, the capital. On a hill above Kioni, there is a beautiful monastery with view to the whole island. A nice route for hikers. You will find the best fish taverns in Kioni and the good thing with taverns in Greece is that you can enjoy your meal for as much time as you want. Nobody hurries you to go. In fact, I noticed that the Greeks sit in taverns for about two hours(!!), which is very relaxing, especially on holidays. There are no ancient sites on Ithacaor castles to see, it is only good to swim and walk. I read in the paper that there are excavations there to find the palace of Ulysses but no luck till now.

We liked Ithaca because it was not the typical Greek destination. If you are looking for sandy beaches and heavy nightlife, don't even think about it. But if you need to relax, then Ithaca is truly your place. The beaches were actually small coves but they were very beautiful, especially the ones you could approach only by boat. Food was fresh and homemade. Only hotel and store onwers could speak some proper English, but you will not have a communication issue, believe me. If you are a Westerner, though, there will be some things to bother you: rubbish on the sides of the streets, abandoned cars and, above all, smoking! This is not particular to Ithaca, but to all Greece. Greeks should ban smoking in public places, or at least create non-smoking areas.

Pure Paradise

I have been to Ithaca many times before but still bought a travel guide to make sure I missed nothing! There is no place like the north of Ithaca. It's like stepping back in time with the stunning villages and amazing people who never forget you and you never forget. If you can get used to the pebbles, the beaches are idylic. Florindinos in Frikes is a good bar, great fun and still the place to be seen. Best cocktails are at the Zac in Stavros. The food on Ithaca is fresh and always delicious. Try Polyphemus in Stavros for a surreal dinning experience. Ithaca is great in everything, pure paradise. Do not change anything on the island, except bringing the ferry back to Vathy and not Piso Aetos but I understand the fuel issue.

Relaxing Ithaca

After a week in busy Kefalonia, we needed a few days in Ithaca to relax. This was our second trip to Ithaca as the first time we didn't have the chance to see all of it. Like Kefalonia, Ithaca is also very green but trully quiet. Rent a car from 2-3 days and visit its picturesque vilages, like Stavros and Kioni but prefer to rent a room in Vathy, as it is more central. Kioni has the best fish restaurants. The top beaches are those which need a boat to go, particularly Sarakiniko.

Boring without friends

It was my wife's wish to spend our summer holidays in Ithaca. It was actually a green island but too quiet, there was no particular nightlife. We went by boat from Patras and I have to say that the vessel was old and the port of Ithaca needed reconstruction. The beaches were nice and clean but quite rocky. Loutsa beach was the only sandy one and suitable for the kids. Ithaca is a lovely island but can end up boring if you go just with your family. You should take some friends with you to have company. Taverns are also expensive and I didn't like the food very much. I am Greek myself and I know to appreciate good dishes.
