This bay is located in the southern part of Ithaca, nearby
the capital, Vathy or Ithaki Town. It has a calm and beautiful
little beach and the remains of a Venetian fortress as
well as its two cannons can be seen and are very interesting.
5 kilometres south of Vathy, Ithaca’s capital, on the
most south-east corner of the island is the Spring of
Aretousa, which is supposed to be the spring described
by Homer in the Odyssey, where Eumaeus, Odysseus’ swineherd,
brought his pigs to drink and where Odysseus met him on
his return, following the directions of the goddess Athena.
The path leading to the spring is shade less and surrounded
by ravines in some spots, so one has to be careful and
not afraid of the highs.

Ancient Alalkomenae or Alalkomenonae |
|
The ruins of the ancient city of Alkomenae (8th century
BC) are standing on a hill above the village of Piso Aetos,
at 5 kilometres south-west of the capital, Vathy or Ithaki
Town.
The archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, trying to locate
the city of Odysseus, described by Homer, brought to light
a prehistoric citadel of polygonal shape, dating from
the 7th century.
Nearby the same site, the British School of Archaeology
excavated the remains of an Archaic temple and other important
archaeological finds among which some are exhibited in
the museum of the village and the rest are housed in the
British Museum of London.

The Monastery of Panagia Katharon |
|
This Monastery is particularly interesting for its fine
frescoes, its rich architecture and the breathtaking view
it offers over the southern half of Ithaca Island. The
monastery was built in the 17th century AD, using ruins
from an ancient temple, at an incredible high altitude,
which offer a magnificent view that nobody should miss.
