Cities of Greece & the Greek Islands

Greece is a peninsular country located on the south eastern side of Europe and the southern side of the Balkans. Although Greece has a large coastline with many islands, it mostly has a mountainous landscape.
The country is divided into regions and island groups that are organized into prefectures.

The capital of the country and the largest of Greece cities is Athens, with a population of about 4,5 millions. Athens is busy with tourists all year round and from the three ports of Attica (Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrion) ferries to all Aegean islands depart.
The second largest city in Greece is Thessaloniki with population of about 1 million and then follows Patra with population of about 250,000. Heraklion in Crete, Ioannina, Larissa and Volos are also large cities and trade centres of the country.
