Lesvos Vatousa 01
Vatousa village Lesvos: Vatoussa is a preserved traditional settlement that dates back from the 10th century, located 63km northwest of Mytilene. It is an area where cattle-breeding is quite developed, which is why there is good production of dairy products. Today, the population reaches 425 inhabitants who are mostly farmers.

Vatoussa as well as three other villages in Lesvos have been declared "a traditional architectural complex" by the Greek Ministry of Culture. It is a village that captivates the visitors with its special architectural features, typical examples of the 19th century. The stone paved streets, the picturesque alleys and the impressive houses and mansions with the ceramic-tiled roofs compose the unique style of this lovely village.

There are Neoclassical buildings totally harmonized with the natural environment. The village has several monuments to visit. Of special interest are the Gogou mansion which hosts the Cultural Centre of Vatoussa and the Folk Art Museum with various collections of items related to the traditional life of the villagers. Some other monuments include the all-male school and the Byzantine Museum next to the church.
