The architecture of Lesvos is of unique beauty.
The many picturesque villages were built amphitheatrically on the slopes of mountains and many of them still have fine examples of the traditional architectural style of the island.
The traditional houses are usually two-storied and built of heavy stones.
They have tiled roofs and their facades are embellished with

laced banisters and dark wooden decorations.
Some old traditional mansions are built with Ionian and Dorian columns which are surrounding them, pediments, monumental fronts and arched curves decorated with archaic statuettes.
Many houses have nice coloured facades and all have wide and long windows as well as heavy wooden doors.
The lovely narrow alleys, streets |

and stone stairs are winding among the various constructions.
Some superb examples of ancient architecture such as the theater in Mytilene, medieval and Ottoman architecture like valide mosque can be admired in Lesvos, as well as numerous beautiful Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, chapels and monasteries. |
