It has been built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a mountain. The walls, the towers and other ruins of a medieval castle are overlooking the village, giving it a picturesque atmosphere. The village has a population of about 500 inhabitants and some believe that it is the birthplace of the famous lyric poet Homer.

Worth-seeing in Volissos and its surroundings are the Monastery of Agia Markella, the castle and the many water mills and Byzantine churches scattered in and around Volissos.
