The town experienced many damages and lost a great part of its beautiful architecture with the disastrous earthquake of 1881.
Nevertheless, in the heart of the town, a part of the old city still remains. Neoclassical buildings, mosques and buildings with strong Arabic influences are embellishing this part of the town.
Modern cafes, shops, houses and administrative buildings are harmoniously blended to the older architecture, creating a lively and attractive scenery.
The important sights of the town are the public garden, the ancient theatre, the statue of Kanaris, the bronze monuments of the Unknown soldiers, the ruins of the walls of ancient Chios and the old neighbourhood located within the walls of the Genovese castle.
Various shops, places for entertainment, accommodations and a good touristy infrastructure are available in Chios Town. |
