Geothermal energy from the Volcano

• Category: News
The geothermal energy of Nisyros may be the solutionĀ for the energy problem of five Dodecanese islands. The municipality of Nisyros and the Greek Public Enterprise for Electricity (DEI) are talking again over the possibility to exploit the geothermal energy of the Volcano of the island to make electricity. The debate for this issue started about 25 years ago, in 1982, but the residents opposed to this idea. They were afraid that there might be a danger for the Volcano to explode, as it is still active. However, DEI is doing efforts today to persuade them for the opposite thing. The authorities of DEI have informed the local authorities on the new methods that will be used and which are expected to nullify the dangers of a volcanic explosion. DEI is thinking to install a geothermal station to the south part of the island and though submarine cables to supply with electricity the Dodecanese islands of Kos, Leros, Kalymnos andĀ Tilos, apart from Nisyros.
