The architecture of Leros is a mixture
of the traditional architectural style of the Dodecanese,
the neoclassical style and the architectural style
of Mussolini’s Italy.
The traditional style of the
Dodecanese reminds of the traditional Cycladic architecture.
Whitewashed houses built of heavy stone, with flat
or tiled roofs and coloured doors surrounded by winding
narrow alleys.

Beautiful neoclassical
buildings are standing next to the traditional houses.
Their dominant ochre and creme colours are wonderfully
blended to the white and blue of the traditional architecture.
Fuchsia and purple bougainvilleas add another touch of
colour to the palette, embellishing the picture.
A
characteristic of Leros is the Italian architecture of
the time of Mussolini. |

Luckily, this kind of imposing
and austere architectural style can only be found in the
harbour of Lakki.
The newer buildings on the island have been constructed
according to the traditional style of Leros, in an attempt
to preserve the authentic and picturesque colours of the
place. |
