The museum is housed in a small, traditional house in Pyrgos, the homeland of the artist, a beautiful village on the north western of the island. The house has narrow rooms, a beautiful yard and it is painted with blue and white, the traditional Cycladic colours.
In the yard, there is a statue of the artist and a copy of "The Sleeping Girl", his most famous work that is housed in the First Cemetery of Athens. This work was made in 1878 and presents a young girl sleeping, symbolizing death.
The interior of the museum hosts furniture of Giannoulis Chalepas, like his bed, table, chairs and tools. These furniture also depict well the traditional decoration of Tinos. In all rooms, there are marble statues and busts made by the artist till his death in 1938, as well as personal items, photographs and information on his life and work. Close to the museum, there is the marble workshop of Pyrgos. |
