Church of the Evangelismos Theotokou

A local legend says that during the 19th century, a nun had a dream where the Virgin Mary told her to search in a specific place for Her icon and built a church in Her name.
The nun Pelagia told her dream to the priest of her village who convinced the inhabitants of Tinos to start some excavations in order to find the sacred icon.
Finally, the icon of the Virgin Mary was found on the 30th January of 1833 and the inhabitants built the impressive church of the Annunciation on the site where they found the miraculous icon that is dated from the Early Christian times.

The architect who made the plans for the church was from Smyrna and the church was built with the contribution of each and every inhabitant of the island, rich and poor.
It is the first monument of the independent Greek State for it was built during the War of Independence.
This architectural work of art has a pebble-paved exterior courtyard of an extreme beauty and dexterity; the materials used for the construction of this massive church were taken from the ancient Byzantine church of Saint John which used to stand there and from the temple of Dionysus which was on the same site before the Byzantine church.
The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary can be seen on the left of the main entrance, on an iconostasis covered with gifts and offers, as the rest of church.
The interior is richly decorated with gold and various valuable icons.

Located on the south east of Tinos, the Monastery of Agia Triada stands on a site of an incredible natural beauty. |

the village of Arnados, on the east-centre of the island, and consists of various smaller churches and numerous auxiliary spaces. This is the convent were the nun Pelagia, the one who found the miraculous icon, lived. She was proclaimed a saint in 1970, and her simple cell is well preserved and can be visited as well as a church that has been built in her honour.
It celebrates her divine vision on July 23rd. Many nuns still live in this convent today.
The main church is dedicated to the Koimisis tis Theotokou (Our Lady of the Angels) and houses a beautiful carved wooden iconostasis of exceptional craft as well as wonderful wall paintings.
There is a museum in the convent that houses old icons dating mainly from the 18th and 19th century and many noteworthy ecclesiastical objects and relics.
The nuns’ handicrafts can be bought in the little salesroom of the museum.
In the Abbey, various important and valuable relics of great interest are exposed.
The monastery celebrates its feast on August the 15th, the day of the Assumption, with a great festival.

This beautiful church is built in the picturesque village of Tripotamos, which located in the west part of the centre of Tinos.
The fine marble works of art decorating it and its small pebbled courtyard, built in 1853, make it unique.

Church of Ypapandi (The Purification of the Virgin Mary) |

This Orthodox parish church is located in the little village of Ktikados, in the centre of Tinos.
The external entrance of the church is in carved marble, and a pure work of art.
The church houses the beautiful icon of Panagia Megalomata (Virgin Large-Eye).
In this church, every Easter Monday the old custom of the Table of Love takes place during which the entire village, Catholic and Orthodox, eats on a common table like brothers and sisters. |

shrine of Panagia Vrysiou (Virgin
of the Fountain) |

The shrine of Panagia Vrysiou is located on a beautiful natural site nearby the sea, about 4 kilometres away from Tarabados.
The present church at the shrine was built at the end of the 19th century.
This church has been built in the beginning of the 17th century when the miracle-working 15th century icon of the Virgin (Virgin and Infant) was found. Panagia Vrysiou has become a religious centre for Greek Catholics.
The true icon is kept in the parish church of Tarabados for security reasons while a copy is kept in the holy altar of Panagia Vrysiou.
The icon is sent back to Vrysi on the two feast days (15th of August and the First Sunday of May) during which important festivals take place.

Church of the Sacred Heart |

This church
was renovated in 1941 and is part of the Catholic Shrine
of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, next to the Orthodox Srine
of Zoodochos Pigi.
The Catholic shrine became the largest organized shrine of Greek Catholics, receiving
thousands of faithful on the Second Sunday of July, the day of its feast.

This imposing church is standing on the south-eastern bay of Agios Ioannis Porto, one of the nicest beaches of the island.
It is a huge whitewashed church with spare lines and a beautiful bell-tower of a bright white colour.
It was built on a high location full of pine trees, where
an ancient sanctuary used to be, and from where one can
enjoy a fantastic view over the beach of Agios Ioannis-Frini.
It is believed that the Apostle Paul came to this monastery to teach Christianity.
The relics of Saint Arsenios Kappadokis are housed in the monastery.
Built in 1634, this monastery was burned many times and rebuilt every time.
Worth-seeing are the beautiful screen created by the famous artist Estathios Prosalendis and the fine icon of the Virgin with its many and valuable offerings. |
