Ancient tower of Exambela on Sifnos: The ruins of the ancient tower in Exambela are found in the southeastern boundary of Exambala. The people of Sifnos built an elaborate network of towers.
The record of these was first reported by Ludwig Ross in 1837 during his four day trip to Sifnos. He was able to visit five “watchtowers” and got information of four more. Ross’s description of the watchtower is said to be the most accurate so far.
Professor Iakovos Dragatsis took great interest in its studies that he excavated many of the towers; and in 1922 published a general study of the ruined towers. He plotted nearly 37 towers found on this island. The real purpose of these towers is debatable and there are various theories suggesting that these were used to send smoke signals used for communication
