First of all, we should mention Chora, the capital of the island. This beautiful settlement is full of whitewashed houses contrasting to the rock on which it is scattered, since it is situated on a hill above the port, it can be seen from the sea.
The houses are distributed in narrow alleys, which also have picturesque windmills, many of which have been renovated and can be visited. In addition, thanks to its location Chora gives the visitors an awesome view of the Aegean Sea, as well as the countryside of the island.
Apart from the natural beauty of this place, there are some interesting sites that are worth seeing, like the Archaeological Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Venetian Castle ruins, the post Byzantine churches, and the square of Agios Athanasios paved in marble among others.
The essence of this location has remained pure along the centuries, as the structure of the place has been respected, to the point that despite the fact of being the capital of the island, Chora has not many tourist facilities. However, it has a few cafes in which the islanders meet daily.
On the other hand, the main port and its surrounding area, known as Livadi, form a settlement having the highest number and variety facilities of the island. For example, Livadi counts on a many different options in terms of nightlife and amusement, as well as of accommodation.
It has many hotels, apartments, studios and rooms available for renting. When it comes to shops, apart from the typical ones, Livadi has a bank and a gas station. However, it still offers natural beauty, especially on its harbour, which has a long sandy beach and offers a nice view of Chora. Livadi can be reached from Chora following a steep and zigzagging paved path, which is very nice and picturesque and so it is enjoyed by tourists.
Another possible option after visiting Chora can be the village of Panagia, situated on the north, contrary to Livadi. Panagia is built on the side of a green hill, which aids on its picturesque look. Those who liked Chora will definitely enjoy this village, as it follows the same line in terms of general style.
Regarding the sites of interest, Panagia has the oldest church of the island, This church has also some eye-catching features, like its few remaining frescoes from the 14th century and its design, belonging to the basilica-type with a double nave with a red-tile dome surrounding.
In case of including this location on the excursions schedule, it may be useful to keep in mind that from August 14th to 16th inclusive, the Panagia festival takes place, which is an amusing celebration in which most of the island participates and enjoy the traditional singing, dancing and eating that characterises the occasion.
Another good place that is not so related to these routes is the coastal village of Megalo Livadi. One of the main advantages of this place is its location, as it guarantees protection from the winds because it is situated on a deep bay.
This feature is especially appreciated in the beach, its main attraction. The shallow and crystalline waters, as well as the shadow provided by the tamarisk trees are also some good points of this beach, which also allows practising some water-sports like windsurfing and water-skiing.
In terms of monuments, Megalo Livadi has monumental buildings in neoclassic style reflecting the old tradition of this area, as they were built to serve as offices of the company that used to exploit the mining resources and the loading ramps, railway lines and rusted wagons that were used for these purposes.
These are just some examples of the many locations and varied activities that can be reached and performed on Serifos. According to the personal taste and circumstances of every visitor, these can be included and combined in the excursion schedules, and in case of looking for one of those offered by tourist agencies, this information can be very useful in order to make the right choice. |
