Overview
Santorini: The famous sunset of Santorini
This incredible scenery attracts thousands of visitors every year to Santorini for vacation, honeymoons and weddings. The island also has attracted several movie productions including Tomb Raider : The Cradle of Life.

The island faces the Caldera, the famous submerged volcano crater situated in the middle of basin of water. The island of Santorini was called Strogili in the Ancient times, which means "rounded" in Greek.
Santorini: The caldera of Santorini
After a terrible eruption, the centre of the island sank in the sea, leaving only the crater and the imposing cliffs of 150m to 300m in height. From these cliffs, one can admire some of the most stunning little villages that seem suspended in the sky.
These villages are made of white typical Cycladic houses with blue painted windows facing the black volcanic rock of the Caldera: a sight that has inspired more than one artist including the Greek poet Seferis, especially when meddled with a horizon tainted by the amazing colours of the sunset, one of the most striking in the world.

Also Yanni, the famous greek pianist, keyboardist and composer, in his live concert in Acropolis ravished the crowd with the song called "Santorini".

These villages are Fira (with Gialos port below), Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia.

Santorini: The famous volcano
The name "Santorini" comes from "Santa Irini", although it is officially called Thera. It is situated at the south of the Cyclades islands, between Ios and Anafi.

The island of Santorini, Greece covers an area of 96 km2 and has a coastline of 69 kilometres, with a length reaching 18 km. It has a population of 6,500-7,000 in the winter but sometimes over 11,000 during the summer.
The most important characteristic of Santorini is the sunken volcano.

The first eruption of the volcano is estimated to have happened around 1500 BC, and many specialists have given it the blame for the destruction of the great Minoan civilization.

The last eruption dates to 1956, and the volcano is still alive today. Some legends lead to believe that the destruction of Santorini could be related to the Mythical Atlantis
