The island faces the Caldera, the famous submerged volcano crater situated in the middle of basin of water. The island of Santorini was called Strogili in the Ancient times, which means "rounded" in Greek.
After a terrible eruption, the centre of the island sank in the sea, leaving only the crater and the imposing cliffs of 150m to 300m in height. From these cliffs, one can admire some of the most stunning little villages that seem suspended in the sky.

The most important characteristic of Santorini is the sunken volcano.
The first eruption of the volcano is estimated to have happened around 1500 BC, and many specialists have given it the blame for the destruction of the great Minoan civilization.
The last eruption dates to 1956, and the volcano is still alive today. Some legends lead to believe that the destruction of Santorini could be related to the Mythical Atlantis.
