The island of Naxos, in Greece, is one of the most popular Greek islands of the Aegean Sea and it belongs to the Cyclades islands group. Naxos island is a mountainous island located in the center of Cyclades. In fact, it hosts the highest mountain of the group, Mount Zas. The capital of the island, Chora, distinguishes for the traditional architecture, the well-preserved Venetian castle and the Portara at the entrance of the port, a large marble gate that constitutes the only remaining from an ancient temple.
All around the coastline, Naxos island offer fabulous beaches with golden sand and crystal water. Some of them are organized with hotels, restaurants and water sports centers, while others are totally secluded. The beaches on the western side, particularly Mikri Vigla, are ideal for windsurfing and kite surfing. A drive in the inland will bring visitors to lovely mountainous villages, interesting sightseeing and spots of natural beauty. Located in the northern side of the island, Apiranthos is a beautiful village with traditional architecture. Surrounded by lush greenery, the region around Apiranthos is nice for hiking.
The village of Halki has traditional architecture with Cycladic and Venetian elements. In summer, the International Axia Festival is organized in the square of Halki.
In the countryside of the island, there are two statues of Kouros: one in Melanes village and the other in Apollonas village. Both these large statues are left on the exact site where they were excavated.
The ancient temple of Demeter is located in a short walk from Ano Sangri, an inland village. It dates from the 6th century BC and was dedicated to the goddess of grain. Next to the temple is an old chapel.
Koronos is a mountainous villagewith picturesque architecture. Surrounded by imposing nature, many hiking trails are found in the region and lead to interesting monuments, churches and small gorges.
The village of Potamia actually consists of three settlements: Ano, Mesi and Kato Potamia. Hiking from one settlement to the other is a unique experience.
Near the village of Moni is the interesting church of Panagia Drossiani. This church was constructed in the 6th century AD and the interior has valuable wall paintings.
Explore the lovely islands of Koufonisia and Iraklia in Small Cyclades through this boat trip from the Town. These two islands have gorgeous waters and totally secluded atmosphere.
In the Middle Ages, this island was conquered by the Venetians, who left an evident mark on the island. Many Venetian towers are found in Naxos, some ruined and others turned into museums.
The fishing port of Moutsouna is located on the eastern side of the island. This is a lovely place with a small beach in front of the settlement and few fish taverns along the port.
In the village of Halki is the interesting Distillery of Vallindras that produces kitron liqueur using the traditional methods. Visitors can see the production process and taste the liqueur.
Naxos is a wonderful island for scuba diving. The surrounding sea bottom is rich in reefs, ship wrecks and bombarded German airplanes to explore. Diving trips to close spots are also organized.
Due to the strong summer winds, Naxos is the best island in Cyclades to enjoy windsurfing and kite surfing. These two sports are largely practiced particularly in Mikri Vigla, Laguna, Plaka and other beaches on the western side.
