About the architecture of Milos, Greece

Set in the blue waters of the Aegean, Milos is one of the most romantic Greek islands. Milos island is prevalent to the Cycladic architecture and blessed with a plethora of rocks and minerals due to its volcanic activity from antiquity. The island is renowned as the place where was found the statue of Venus of Milos. Picturesque villages and settlements famous for their Cycladic tradition will impress you with their charm and beauty.

Plaka is one of the most intact villages in Cyclades, founded in the early 19th century. This beautiful Cycladic settlement encircles the venetian castle which stands on top with many whitewashed houses, colourful doors and shutters, flowered balconies and narrow alleys. From up there, visitors will enjoy an idyllic view of the sunset and the neighbouring islands of Cyclades. The ascending and descending trails in Plaka will lead you to beautiful churches and two museums.

Not far from the capital is the fishing village of Klima with the characteristic tiny white houses carved in the rocks, known as syrmata. This village has the most distinctive architecture of Milos. Equally interesting are the villages of Emporios, Mandrakia and Pollonia. Adamas, the main port of Milos combines peace with the vivid nightlife and a beautiful Cycladic scenery. Also worth seeing are the few remaining edifices from the past like the Ancient Theatre, near the village of Tripiti and the Venetian Castle in Chora. Apart from the traditional architecture, modern buildings are found plenty mostly at the centre of Milos such as the newly-established Conference Centre, near Adamas.

Visitors can enjoy their stay in many of the traditional hotels that have respected the traditional Cycladic architecture.
