Some cultural activities and local religious festivals can be seen and lived in Ios Greece. As in all the Cyclades, each one of the hundreds of churches and monasteries celebrates, once a year, its feast day with feasting, dancing, eating and drinking all
     

Every year in May, the most important cultural event takes place on Ios Island: the Homeria festival, held in honour of the Greek epic poet Homer who wrote the Odyssey and the Iliad and whose grave is supposed to be on Ios.

The most important religious celebrations during summer are the feast of Agios Ioannis Prodromos (24th of June and of August) at the monastery of Pyrgos (the Venetian castle located at the highest spot of the island), the feast of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) on the 29th of August in Kalamos and Psathi during which a meat soup and the traditional bean soup are served, accompanied with traditional music, wine and dances.

This festival is the pride of the inhabitants of Ios and very important for them. During the Homeria, sport events, lectures, theatrical plays and contests, art exhibitions, folk dances, concerts, folk art and creative workshops and a lot more cultural events are taking place around the island.
On the beautiful setting of the amphitheatre Odysseas Elytis concerts and plays are performed during summer. Information can be gained at the travel and information centre nearby the archaeological museum in Hora.
