How to get to the main ports of Greece

Below, you will find what you need to know about the different ports in the mainland of Greece.

Killini

Ferries to Zakynthos and Kefalonia leave from the small port of Killini in western Peloponnese. If you don't/can't have your own vehicle, you can reach this port by bus from Athens. There are public buses to Zakynthos and Kefalonia that depart from Kifissos KTEL Station in Athens, get to the port of Killini and embark on the ferry to go to the islands. The journey to Kilini takes about 4 hours.

Volos

Ferries from Volos head to the Sporades Islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos). To go to Volos from Athens, you have to take the bus from Liossion KTEL Station. The bus takes about 5 hours to reach Volos. There are frequent itineraries from Athens, approximately every 1 to 2 hours.

Patras

Ferries from Patra reach Kefalonia, Ithaca and Italy (Ancona, Bari, Venice). To go from Athens to Patra, you can either take the suburban railway or an intercity bus from Kifissos KTEL Station. The trip lasts about 3 hours and itineraries to domestic destinations are daily during the high season.

Thessaloniki

Ferries from Thessaloniki usually travel to the Eastern Aegean Islands. To go from Athens to Thessaloniki, you can either take the bus or the train.
- Trains leave from Larissis Station and take 4 to 6 hours to get to Thessaloniki, depending on whether it is an express or normal route. There are trains from Athens to Thessaloniki about 4 times a day.
- Buses to Thessaloniki depart from Kifissos KTEL Station and KTEL Attikis Bus Station multiple times a day. The trip lasts about 6 hours.

Kavala

Ferries from Kavala travel to islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese. Suburban buses to Kavala leave from Kifissos KTEL Station in Athens 2 times a day. The trip to Kavala lasts about 8 hours. However, Kavala also has an international airport connected to the airport of Athens so you can fly there.

Alexandroupolis

Ferries to Alexandroupolis reach the island of Samothraki. There are buses from Kifissos KTEL Station in Athens to Alexandroupolis via Thessaloniki. There are buses about 5 times a day and the trip takes about 10 hours. However, Alexandroupolis also has a national airport connected to the airport of Athens so you can fly there.

Agios Konstantinos

Ferries from Agios Konstantinos go to the Sporades Islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos). To get to Agios Konstantinos from Athens, you have to take a bus to Lamia from Liossion KTEL Station that makes a stop at Agios Konstantinos on the way. The route from Athens to Agios Konstantinos is about 2.5 hours. There are buses every 2 hours (approximately).

Neapolis

Ferries from the port of Neapolis in Laconia go to Elafonissos and Kythira. To get to Neapolis, you can use a suburban bus from Kifissos KTEL Station in Athens to Sparti. Note that not all itineraries to Sparti stop at Neapolis, so make sure to inform the person at the ticket booth about your destination. There are routes every day and the trip lasts about 6 hours.

Igoumenitsa

Ferries from Igoumenitsa reach Corfu and Italy (Ancona, Bari, Venice). There are suburban buses that leave from Kifissos KTEL Station in Athens and arrive in Igoumenitsa in about 7 hours. Itineraries are daily.
If you want to go to Corfu by bus, you can take the suburban bus from Kifissos KTEL Station to Corfu, since such buses embark on a ferry in Igoumenitsa. This is easier than getting off the bus in Igoumenitsa, walking to the port and then taking the ferry to Corfu.

Kymi

Ferries from Kymi head to Skyros. Suburban buses depart from Liossion KTEL Station in Athens and get to Kymi in about 3 hours. There are buses about 3 times a day.

Gythio

Ferries from Gythio go to Kythira, Antikythira and Kissamos (Crete). There are buses that leave from Kifissos KTEL Station in Athens and arrive in Gythio in about 5 hours. Some routes are direct, while others are via Sparti. Buses run about 3-4 times a day.
