Thessaly Museums

Thessaly museums

Information about the Museums in Thessaly, in Greece but also information about museums in many locations of the region: The rich cultural and folklore tradition of the area has led to the creation of many museums in the beautiful towns of Pelion and the extraordinary monastic state of Meteora. Of high interest are the monasteries of Meteora which still stand as actual museums on top of the pillar rock. These architectural masterpieces are well preserved in time and comprise unique treasures.

Among the six monasteries that still work in Meteora, Great Meteoron is the only one that has officially opened as a museum with a nice collection of manuscripts, icons and other handmade items from the personal work of the monks. The 14th century Varlaam monastery, the second largest monastery after Great Meteoro displays a fine collection of icons and relics. Of notable importance is Roussanou Monastery.

In the well-preserved villages of Pelion you will find a few museums which highlight the history of the area. The most important place to visit is the Folklore Museum in Makrinitsa, a beautiful village in Pelion. Its collection highlights different aspects of folk art including local costumes, photograph material, rare books, kitchen vessels and items of daily use. The museum is housed in a traditional mansion. What is today known as the Greek Museum used to be the school of Rigas, the first school of Zagora, the lovely village in Pelion.
