Festival of Agios Georgios

A local festival known as panigiraki is celebrated these days in Arachova. The festival is dedicated to Saint George (Agios Georgios), the protector of the town. The festival started yesterday, the second day of the Greek Easter, and will last till Thursday, April 23rd, the name day of the saint. It includes Holy Mass to Saint George, an honorary ceremony to the monument of National hero Georgios Karaiskakis and many traditional costumes.

Men and women wear their traditional clothes and follow a litany around the town, carrying the Holy Icon of Saint George. Moreover, there is sports events, traditional eating and dancing in the central square and concerts with traditional musical instruments, such as bagpipes and snare drums.
