Skyros Architecture

Reflecting a strong influence from Cycladic architecture, Skyros Greece gives you a glimpse into the truly traditional Greek style of houses and buildings. The villages are very traditional and give you the feeling of walking through a museum. Due to the Cycladic influence, the architecture of Skyros has retained all the key elements associated with it, such as the cube-shape, the white walls, the wooden doors, and beautiful flowering balconies.

The buildings demonstrate the history of Skyros island, as many of these houses contain various artifacts from the many periods in the history of Skyros. The entire town of Skyros is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill. There are numerous historical monuments such as the Byzantine monastery and a medieval castle which create an imposing image of the island. The history of the city dates back to the Stone Age. This is why the city is dotted with minarets dating back to antiquity.

The houses cluster on the sides and around the base of the Medieval Castle in order to protect themselves from pirate raids, as was common that era in all Greek islands.

Visitors can enjoy their stay in many of the traditional hotels that have respected the traditional architecture.
